UN chief: “education is a powerful tool to counter hate speech”.

Growing polarization and intolerance are fuelling a rise in hate speech worldwide, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on Thursday, in remarks to the opening of an online forum to counter this “global firestorm” through the power of education

The online forum event brings together teachers, youth, civil society organizations, human rights experts, tech and social media companies, and government representatives.

Mobilizing against hatred

“Across the globe, public discourse is being coarsened, democratic values threatened, and social cohesion undermined,” the UN chief said.

While social media is contributing to hate speech being disseminated more quickly than previously imaginable.

This is especially alarming when we consider that mass violence never arises in the absence of hate speech.

It is the fuel that allows the fire to ignite, and it is a direct threat our common cause of peace, stability, sustainable development and human dignity.”

The UN Secretary-General pointed to the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech, which addresses the issue holistically, including root causes, drivers and the impact on victims and societies, according UN News.

Ethiopian Government: ‘7 UN officials to leave country within 72 hours’.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres voiced his shock on Thursday after the Ethiopian Government declared seven UN staff persona non grata, ordering them to leave the country within 72 hours.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a tweet that five members of the UN humanitarian affairs officeOCHA, including senior leaders, were being ordered out of the country.

And as well the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Representative, and a team leader from the UN human rights officeOHCHR.

As a reminder that all UN humanitarian operations are guided by “the core principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence”, the UN chief’s statement reacting to the expulsion order.

Antonio Guterres added that in Ethiopia, “the United Nations is delivering lifesaving aid, including food, medicine, water, and sanitation supplies, to people in desperate need”.

Some 5.2 million people currently need help in the country’s northern regions of Tigray, Amhara and Afar, after heavy fighting erupted last November between central Government troops and those loyal to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.

The tweet from the foreign ministry, said that it was ejecting the UN officials for allegedly “meddling in the internal affairs of the country”, according UN News.

Brazil’s President Bolsonaro: ‘Only God can take me from the presidency’.

President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil claimed in front of his 114,000 fans on Tuesday: ‘only God could remove him from power and expel him from the country‘.

Bolsonaro has launched new attacks on Congress and the Supreme Court, claiming that these institutions are pursuing him and his political friends.

The Brazilian president is currently the subject of many investigations, which were just approved by the court.

Meanwhile, his approval rating continues to fall, with 61 percent of Brazilians judging his government’s performance as poor or extremely poor, according to a poll conducted by Atlas Institute.

When he first entered office in January 2019, his approval rating was only 23 percent.

Last week, he told Christian groups that he has three options for his future: ‘being arrested, dead, or victorious‘.

Evangelical leaders are some of Bolsonaro’s most fanatic supporters.

On Brazil’s Independence Day, protesters gathered in the streets to support the country’s president, while others demonstrated against him.

UN chief: “Humanity remains unacceptably close to nuclear annihilation”.

“Now is the time to eliminate nuclear weapons from our world , and usher in a new era of dialogue, trust and peace”, declared UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Sunday, marking the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

Addressing the threat of nuclear weapons, said Mr, Guterres, has been central to the work of the United Nations since its inception.

The first UN General Assembly resolution in 1946 sought “the elimination from national armaments of atomic weapons and of all other major weapons adaptable to mass destruction.”

The UN chief pointed out that, although the total number of nuclear weapons has been decreasing for decades, some 14,000 are stockpiled around the world.

Which is facing the highest level of nuclear risk in almost four decades: “States are qualitatively improving their arsenals, and we are seeing worrying signs of a new arms race.”

Humanity, continued the UN chief, remains unacceptably close to nuclear annihilation, according UN News.

UN chief Antonio Guterres appeals for countries to sign nuclear test-ban treaty.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday again urged eight key countries which have not yet signed or ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), to do so without delay.

His request came in remarks to the latest conference to promote the treaty’s entry into force, which were delivered by UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu.

Near universal acceptance

The CTBT was adopted in 1996 and has been signed by 185 countries, and ratified by 170 of them, including three nuclear weapons-holding States: France, Russia and the United Kingdom.

However, for the Treaty to enter into force, it must be signed and ratified by 44 specific nuclear technology holder countrieseight of which have yet to ratify the Treaty: China, Egypt, India, Iran, Israel, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Pakistan and the United States.

The last Annex 2 State to ratify the Treaty was Indonesia on 6 February 2012.

The UN Secretary-General stated that a prohibition on nuclear testing is an essential element of a nuclear weapons-free world.

The CTBThas created an almost universally adopted norm against the testing of nuclear weapons,” he added.

“Given its necessity and readiness, it is both disappointing and frustrating that the Treaty has not yet entered into force.

We all know the reason for this, the eight remaining Annex II States whose ratifications are required for the Treaty’s entry-into-force,” he said.

“As a result, a critical element of our collective security cannot be fully operationalized.

I repeat my call to these States to sign and ratify the CTBT as soon as possible.

I also call on all other States that have not yet signed or ratified the treaty to do so without delay”, according UN News.

Boris Johnson to UN: ‘The adolescence of humanity is coming to an end’.

In his speech to the high-level debate at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared that ‘it is time for mankind to grow up and take responsibility for the damage we are inflicting on the planet’.

Boris Johnson said: “The human species is nearing the end of the adolescent phase of its evolutionary lifespan“.

He referred to November’s COP26 UN climate conference, which he is hosting in the Scottish city of Glasgow, as the moment to show that mankind is capable of learning and maturing.

Daily, weekly, we are doing such irreversible damage that, long before a million years (of humankind) are up, we will have made this beautiful planet effectively uninhabitable, not just for us but for many other species”, said the Prime Minister of the UK.

Business as usual, warned the UK leader, will see temperatures going up by more than 2.7 degrees or more by the end of the century, with disastrous consequences, because of human action.

“Our grandchildren”, he said, “will know that.. we missed our cue, and they will ask what kind of people we were to be so selfish and so short-sighted”.

Looking ahead to COP26, Mr. Johnson described the climate conference as a opportunity to grow up, a metaphorical “16th birthday party for humanity”, at which the world can celebrate a coming of age, and “blow out the candles of a world on fire”, according UN News.

UN chief: “Restore trust and inspire hope” to UN General Assembly.

With humanity on the edge of an abyss, and moving in the wrong direction, the world must wake up“, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in his keynote address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

Antonio Guterres called for greater action in areas such as climate policy, gender equality and closing the gap between rich and poor.

“This is our time.

A moment for transformation.

An era to re-ignite multilateralism.

An age of possibilities,” the UN Secretary-General told world leaders and ambassadors.

“Let us restore trust.

Let us inspire hope.

And let us start right now.”

Amid “the greatest cascade of crises in our lifetimes”, which include the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate emergency, and upheaval in places such as Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Yemen.

Mr. Guterres singled out one disturbing image as indicative of the present moment, citing “the picture we have seen from some parts of the world of COVID-19 vaccines…in the garbage.

Expired and unused”.

“On the one hand, we see the vaccines developed in record time, a victory of science and human ingenuity.

On the other hand, we see that triumph undone by the tragedy of a lack of political will, selfishness and mistrust.”

For the UN Secretary-General, the fact that most wealthier countries are vaccinated, while more than 90 per cent of Africans are still awaiting their first dose, was “a moral indictment of the state of our world” and “an obscenity”, according UN News.

Here is what Haile Selassie adresses:

“Until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned.

That until there are no longer first-class and second class citizens of any nation.

That until the color of a man’s skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes.

That until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race.

That until that day, the dream of lasting peace and world citizenship and the rule of international morality will remain but a fleeting illusion, to be pursued but never attained.”

Bob Marley quotes Psalms 87 about Haile Selassie.

Here is Psalm 87 of the King James Version:

Psalm 87

1His foundation is in the holy mountains.

The Lord loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah.

I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to them that know me: behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this man was born there.

And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the highest himself shall establish her.

The Lord shall count, when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there. Selah.

As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee.
