Facebook and YouTube are well known for their algorithms’ ability to pull people down deep, extreme rabbit holes . is also guilty of this. And it’s happening much faster than its competitors.
How does that work?
My TikTok FYP (for you page) consists largely of funny cat videos, cooking videos, and book recommendations. It’s a cheerful, relaxing space where I can easily lose myself for hours. My neighbor’s girl’s FYP is mostly dance videos and pranks from teenagers.
It’s different for everyone, because the algorithm quickly learns which videos resonate with you. Through your interactions with those videos—such as watch time, comments, and likes— the algorithm learns what you want to see more of. But unfortunately, there’s a danger in that.
How the algorithm pulls you into rabbit holes
Despite warnings and privacy concerns , TikTok has become a formidable competitor to Facebook and YouTube. People spend more time watching videos, and it’s currently the most downloaded app .In July, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) published a sensational study showing that TikTok can quickly lead you down rabbit holes . And it only needs to know your video watch time to uncover all your interests (and weaknesses).
How did they approach the research?
The journalists created over 100 bots on TikTok. They kept personal data to a minimum: only the account name (neuter), IP address (location), and age were known to TikTok. Each bot had a few specific interests in watching videos (such as yoga, extreme sports, or depression), but these were not entered in TikTok. The bots expressed these interests purely by rewatching or pausing videos that matched their interests. Watch the video for more explanation and the results. From mainstream to niche
TikTok has a smart and addictive user interface . You open the app, and the first video (up to 3 minutes long) starts playing immediately. You don’t have to search (although you can), and if you don’t like a video, you can easily swipe to the next one. And so on.If you’re new to TikTok, you’ll initially be presented with popular (mainstream) videos. The Wall Street Journal found that based on the bots’ viewing behavior on certain videos, TikTok increasingly suggested videos tailored to their interests. In other words, the longer you watch and the more you interact, the more likely you are to encounter niches.
That’s not so shocking in itself. But what is worrisome is that these niches may contain harmful videos that don’t meet TikTok’s terms and conditions, yet still slip through the cracks.
